I have always known on a purely intellectual level that "it can happen anywhere," but this story is shocking. Margate, where the man was stabbed, is where my wife and I have been going since we were infants. It is a small city—about 8,500 people live in a space of just over 1 square mile—without any discernible "bad part of town." I've never, ever been concerned about street crime there.
