Jolted from Complacency

I have always known on a purely intellectual level that "it can happen anywhere," but this story is shocking. Margate, where the man was stabbed, is where my wife and I have been going since we were infants. It is a small city—about 8,500 people live in a space of just over 1 square mile—without any discernible "bad part of town." I've never, ever been concerned about street crime there.

Damn. I've lived there twice, from 1994 to 1997 and again from 2003 to 2004. I can't imagine anything like that happening. How sad.
