as some one living in the state of ohio, who lives in likely the only decent place in ohio, and who has first hand knowledge of the unbearable banality of dayton ohio (and other ohio towns like it)--i feel your pain. i am sorry. i apologize, before hand, for the state of ohio.

That is *very* true... Amarillo, Texas... Fort Smith, Arkansas... Quad Cities, Iowa (just a few that spring to mind).

Although, I've found, there's at least *something* redeeming to pretty much everywhere... the Cadillac Ranch, lawn ball hunting and visiting my friend Cath, respectively. :)

I'm actually a victim of my own success. The higher-ups have decided to back heavily a new software product. They're putting together a "SWAT team" (the choice of terms is wonderfully revealing, I think) to install and configure the thing and to support the beta sites.

Based on my reviews, my boss's boss and my boss's boss's boss picked me for the team. Our U.S. headquarters is in Dayton (the choice of location is wonderfully revealing, I think), so I'm being sent there to work with the developers for a month.

I'm not sure which is more frightening:

1) That you're spending a month there

2) That I'm spending the night there August 5-6, to give a speech on Current Developments on No Child Left Behind, to the Miami Regional Educational Service Center

3) That about three weeks ago the New York Times travel section actually covered Dayton.

I know you'll pick 1, but hey, that's you.

You'll live. Will you be able to get on Cincinnati? They've got an amazing new museum designed by Zaha Hadid, the b.f.'s all over her. Figuratively. Intellectually. (He's an architect.) Oh, and you can go visit the Superfriends Hall of Justice Cincinnati Museum Center.
