One reason is that I don't like my writing style. I think I'm a master of the mechanics of writing, but my words seem to trip all over each other. I don't like their flow, and I don't like their rhythms.
Another reason is that I don't think I have any ear for dialogue.
I tell myself that I will write something someday soon, although I keep thinking of it as a new venture. But I just remembered a story I wrote in high school. It was a pure ripoff of Lovecraft, but no one seemed to notice, and it was published in the school's annual review of the students' best writing. Some of my classmates told me that the story scared the shit out of them.
My achievements of twenty years ago don't bear heavily on what I can or should do now. But it's nice to remember that I had some hand for this, and that I may still have it. It suddenly feels less foreign to me. It also feels odd that I had forgotten about this for so long.
