On The Menu

Tonight's homemade dinner:

• Mesclun Salad
• Broiled-Roasted Porterhouse Steak
• Baked Potato
• Steamed Snow Peas
• Magnolia Bakery Cupcakes or Mixed Berries (We haven't decided yet).

I think we ought to resume inviting people over for dinner.

Mmmm...steak. In my mind, a good steak should be like the St. Valentine's Day massacre: bloody. There's nothing like a thick steak lying in a pool of it's own blood. I hope I didn't gross you out; I just love rare steak.

You didn't gross me out; you made me hungry.

Except that I have to trust the source of the meat a lot before I'll order it rare. It's not that I'm worried about contamination. Really, I just think that if there's any chance a steak might be chewy, it becomes more tractable if they cook it medium rare. But at, say, Luger's, it's rare, rare, rare.

I haven't found too many places that will make a really rare steak here in Chi-town. Medium-rare is as risky as most joints will get. I guess they're afraid you'll sue their ass if you catch a bit of the e. coli. If I want rare steak, I usually have to do it myself.
