I'm here. The work is going well enough. One unexpected benefit is an opportunity to turn this quick, minor project into just the first phase of a massive transformation of their system, with the billings that would entail.
The downside is that I have lots of work to do in the two days I am here. That's why I was working in my hotel room until 1 AM last night. It also means I'm going to be a little late responding to some interview-meme questions.
Also, there seem to be few good restaurants near my hotel. Not that I'm a malcontent or anything.

Date: 2003-06-04 08:27 am (UTC)there's a $30 brunch at the Jefferson that's truly a 5-star experience. definitely treat yourself once as a necessary business expense for working in Richmond.
track down a place called Comfort. excellent southern food and a cool atmosphere. kellianne and i tried nearly everything on their menu. this is the probably the best choice for a regular place to eat.
good italian can be had at Mama Zu's and Edo Squid. both restaurants are owned by the same people and have similar menus (and odd names).
there is also an excellent organic grocery store called Elwood Thompsons, at the intersection of Elwood and Thompson streets up in the Cary town neighborhood.
where's your hotel located?

Date: 2003-06-06 10:16 am (UTC)The first night, I stayed at the Marriott, near the new convention center. This was actually a nice enough place, but it may as well have been in the middle of the desert. I was able to find a decent enough place, which had an astonishing selection of beers but so-so food.
Figuring I ought to find a nicer place, I spent the second night at the Crowne Plaza, which was disappointing. Still, I took your advice and drove to Comfort, where I had a wonderful dinner. I sat at the bar, chatted with the artist sitting next to me, and had some really good salmon. It was the finest meat-and-three I'd ever been in. ;-)
Finally, last night, I stayed at the Omni, which is where I should have stayed in the first place and where I will stay on future trips. I walked down Cary Street and settled on a restaurant called the Hard Shell, where I had unremarkable seared tuna. But I found enough other places that I shall have no shortage of options during my next visit.
Thanks for the tips!
Figuring I ought to look for some
