City Nights
May. 11th, 2003 12:15 pmLast night I went to Lucky Cheng's for the second time. The first time was under unusual circumstances, so it didn't really count. This was the first time I ever saw it under normal operating conditions, and it was unimpressive. The food was as mediocre as I remembered, and the drinks were overpriced.
The show was even more disappointing, as the various drag queens really seemed just to do the same shtick over and over. It was just as if Disney had decided to open Homoland in between Space Mountain and the Country Bears Jamboree. And I suppose that's what it needs to be, if they're catering to bachelorette parties from Staten Island and Hoboken, but something about this kind of inauthenticity seemed dangerous.
Or maybe I'm just being snotty and dramatic. In truth, I liked hanging out with most of the people, and the others seemed mostly to enjoy themselves.
We left at about 9:45, and I was asked to escort our amoeba-like crowd to Veniero's. When we got there, there was a twenty-minute wait for a table big enough for us, so I excused myself and went to the second stop, a bar and restaurant called Sage, on Park Avenue South.
Sage is new, I think, and tragically hip. A friend had helped put together a party in the bar upstairs, and I planned to meet my wife there after we had each finished our early plans. I got there and found a seriously overcrowded room containing nearly no one I knew. After a while, though, I had a drink and a peer group, and I talked and discreetly ogled the many girls of the sort that I feel shallow for thinking they're sexy. A friend let slip that she thought a guy standing near us was hot, so I went over to him and told him so.
I'm the helpful sort, is all.
After about an hour, my wife called from downstairs; they wouldn't let her up because the top floor was overcrowded, and the lower floor was full of people waiting to be allowed up. So I came down to meet her, and we agreed it was time to go home.

Date: 2003-05-12 05:34 am (UTC)My mother was in the cell phone business, so I got my first one in the late 80's, back when they were bulky and expensive, and I've had them ever since. Shockingly, my wife bought her first one only about 3 years ago. She would have no way to live without it now. They're really like alien pods or something.
