What Are We Fighting For?

Come join The Medill Club of Greater New York in an open and frank discussion about the media's coverage of the war in Iraq at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 21 at the New York Historical Society.

Following the heated comments about the war on the Medill alumni listserv, we're hoping to foster a no-holds-barred question-and-answer exchange between the panel and the audience. Topics that may be raised include whether the coverage has been too slanted to the Bush administration's perspective; the appropriateness of having journalists "embedded"; the war's real causes and how Corporate America is responding to the conflict.

Loren Ghiglione, dean of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, will moderate the discussion. Panelists include Edith Lederer, veteran war correspondent for the Associated Press; Sean Herbert, producer of war coverage for CBS News (MSJ '91); Onnic Marashian, editor emeritus of Platts Oilgram News, the standard for oil industry news; Martin Langfield, deputy news editor for North America at Reuters; Bill Weinberg, an award-winning 20-year veteran journalist, and editor of "World War 3 Report"; Lora Western, foreign news editor for The Wall Street Journal (BSJ/MSJ '86); Jim Fuchs, a former Air Force Captain who is about to retire from his role as the deputy director of the Pentagon's New York media outreach office, and Richard Edelman, president and CEO of Edelman Public Relations Worldwide. We've also invited journalists from the military, The New York Times and Al-Jazeera as well as a few other outlets.
