It is not necessarily jarring to learn that a longtime acquaintance is gay. Except, that is, when the way one learns is by reading it in a front-page article in the New York Sun.

No. As I say, an acquaintance.

Still, there has been enough casual conversation over the years that I am surprised never to have heard of his partner or adopted son.
