Last night was a fun, late night.

It started slowly (for me) as we went to see Paul Weller at the Hammerstein Ballroom. My wife has been a huge Weller fan for years, but this is the first time she has ever managed to see him live. For my part, I had never heard of Weller until I started dating Lauren--now, occasionally I'm in the mood for him, in small doses, but otherwise I just tune him out.

We met some friends there who we hadn't seen in a while, which was cool. Seeing these friends became unnecessarily complicated after the band that some of them were in broke up in an ugly fashion; it was sort of like a divorce where the spouses unofficially divide up their friends. We still see two of the guys in the band, even though they don't really talk to each other. It's all very dramatic for no reason and will make a fine episode of Behind the Music someday.

The show itself was good, if you like Paul Weller. Lauren had a great time.

After the concert, we met a second group of people at Plant Bar in the East Village. These were mostly people that Lauren had met at her yoga retreat in Costa Rica, and it was my first chance to meet them. We got there at about 11:30 and stayed for about an hour.

From Plant Bar, though, our whole crowd went to a karaoke place a few blocks away for the evening's highlight. This place rented small, private rooms with their own karaoke machines. To give you an idea of the size of the room, there were seven of us, and we fit comfortably, but ten would have been pushing it.

Singing was loud, drunk, and enthusiastic. Occasionally it was good, too. My karaoke song, "Desperado," was not available, which bothered me, but I got over it. "Jump Jive and Wail" is a surprisingly good karaoke song; Steely Dan's "Do it Again" is not. We had some brief awkwardness involving the security staff. And we left at 3 A.M., and made it to bed just before 4. On our way out, we ran into friends who had been in another room and happened to be leaving at the same time.

Then this morning, Lauren had to get up in time to participate (by phone) in the "Satellite Sisters" radio show at 9 AM. She is now napping. Considering the weather, this is a fine day to stay inside and nap your hangover away.

Meanwhile, I have an orientation next week with VLA. Work is just being annoying.
