Not My Favorite Week
Mar. 10th, 2005 08:36 pmLeo had his first surgery today. The goals were to take away part of the giant mole on his back and to make some progress on his scalp.
Going in, for the first time in at least five months, I was a good deal more tired than Lauren. Work is acting up, and, since I was planning to take two days off, I needed to finish as much as I could. That meant working all last weekend, including working until 5 AM Sunday night, 3 AM Tuesday night, and 1 AM last night. Today, Leo's surgery was scheduled for 7:30 AM, which meant we had to check in to NYU hospital at 6:30, which in turn meant that Daddy was very, very tired.
The surgery went well, according to the surgeon. Leo has one vertical incision that runs nearly the length of his spine and a a horizontal one that crosses the bottom of his back. Both are covered by a not-entirely-waterproof dressing from which blood still slightly oozes, soaking through his clothes.
The surgeon insists that this is nothing to worry about. "Don't worry unless you see blood gushing onto the floor," he said. Oddly, this reassures us.
Leo has some pain, notwithstanding the Tylenol with codeine he has been prescribed. Perhaps the biggest problem has been finding a position to feed him in. Even then, between the discomfort and the drug-induced grogginess, he hasn't eaten much. A day or two of undereating won't do him much harm, but it adds to the general air of parental anxiety.
Lauren and I have both been a little on edge from strain, worry, and lack of sleep. But we'll be fine, and Leo will be fine, too.
