But, in all honesty, that's not that surprising; when you actually manage to get your guy elected, and reelected, it tends to limit the number of candidates. Since 1948, Democrats have controlled the White House for 24 years, and Republicans for 32. In addition, the Republicans have tended to win stronger majorities, 2000 notwithstanding. Neither Truman nor Clinton ever won a majority of the popular vote; Kennedy probably didn't, even setting aside ballot shenanigans in Illinois & Texas (the issue is actually Alabama); Carter only squeeked by. Only Johnson in '64 won big. Conversely, the Republicans won decisive victories in '52, '56, '72, '80, '84, and '88.
