Still out of town, but returning tomorrow. Mrs. Lawnrrd is already home, having to work tomorrow morning. I stayed one more night at my in-laws because I have a dentist appointment tomorrow.

I've been seeing the same dentist for twenty years. This is ridiculous because I have to go to Philadelphia every time I need my teeth cleaned. But it's also one of the oldest interpersonal relationships I have, so I plan to stick with it.

Yesterday was breakfast at one of the two notorious delis on the Main Line. (Here, one is either a Hymie's person or a Murray's person: I was raised with Murray's, but Lauren is friends with the owner of Hymie's.) This was followed by two hours at the controversy-plagued Barnes Foundation.

For those of you not familiar with it, the Barnes has an astonishing collection of impressionist works, including at least 180 Renoirs and 69 Cézannes. I had never been, although I grew up about a mile away. You need a reservation to get in, and they admit only about 200 people each day.

I liked it more than I thought I would. I'm not normally one for impressionists, but this time I could see better why some people go mad for them. Still, after the hundredth Renoir or so, I really had had enough.

That evening, we ordered pizza and cheesesteaks, and friends came over to watch the Eagles football game. They won easily, and thanks to the Lions' stunning upset win, the Eagles now have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. That makes me happier.

Today we had brunch with my sister-in-law and her husband at their country club. The food was good, but the presence of their children meant we had to sit in the kids' room. There were many other children present. I mostly enjoyed brunch anyway.

We came home, napped, tidied up, packed, etc. We went to Center City Philadelphia for a dinner in which Peking Duck figured prominently, and then dropped Lauren off at the train station.

I'm burned out on all this socializing. I need some downtime, but I'm not going to get it—at least, not enough. I'm home for just over a day before I go away again for New Year's celebrations. These celebrations involve several friends, tapas, and the least salacious hot tub in the world.

Don't get me wrong: I like most of these people, and I often have fun with them, even though they really aren't my kind of people. But I'm just overwhelmed. I need to recharge. I need to catch up on the things that are important to me.

Well, if we don't see you Tuesday at Rose's, we'll assume you're resting.

By the way, Chuck and I discovered that Robby Stamper does the happy hour (4-9) at The Duplex on Saturdays and Sundays, and does three-part harmony on "Hard Candy Christmas" there with Jimmy Keaton and Kurt Kelly.

Not that we need another time sink....
