December's annual soundtrack is in heavy rotation everywhere. For the sixth year, I find myself wondering if the writer of the lyrics for "The Little Drummer Boy" could possibly have been a parent. Because every time I hear that carol, I think of Joseph.

The poor guy was sleep-deprived to the point of hallucination, as new fathers universally are. And unless he had the mother of all cuckolding fetishes, he must have been at least a little bit resentful that it was all for someone else's kid, too.

Finally, he gets the little plastic baby Jesus to stop crying and nap. All he wants is a blessed minute of rest. Then some urchin wanders off of the street, into the baby's room stall, and starts BANGING BANGING ZOMG STOP THE BANGING on the percussion. I can imagine lots of consequences, but nothing heartwarming.

Huh; all I think about is David Bowie casually popping by Bing Crosby's house. I just don't give enough thought to theological matters.

Come, they told him...

Just the other day, I had the supreme revelation that the real beauty of the iPod is I could at last have a compilation of xmas carols that did not include any rendition whatsoever of The Little Drummer Boy. Ah...
