So we took little Leo to the deity of pediatric dermatology (DOPD) yesterday. Their office called and asked if we could be there in 90 minutes so the doctor could see us first. We could, we did, and he did.

The DOPD and one of his minions came in and looked at Leo while we talked. The short version is that this is a rare, purely random condition, with no known connection to any genetic or environmental factors. The more important thing is that it is almost certainly a purely cosmetic problem.

In very rare cases, there can be neurologic involvement, though, so we will schedule an MRI in the next couple of weeks to rule that out.

It is a serious cosmetic issue, but they seemed confident that it could be handled well through plastic surgery. Because of the size of the one on his back, they will need to excise it in stages, expanding the clean skin between surgeries to provide more covering. In this case, it's fortunate that he's a boy; chicks dig scars. It's even more fortunate that there aren't any on his face. Treatment will probably start in six to nine months.

In the meantime, he's a little fussy because he has gas, but otherwise he's healthy and reasonably good-tempered. We have some help, and she's been a godsend. Lauren sleeps when she can. I do, too, but I have much greater opportunity.
