Besides the volleyball league I've been playing in, I just found an open volleyball night. Every Friday night, for 3 1/2 hours, there are pickup games at a gym on the Upper West Side. I played the first decent games since I got into this. I think I'm going to be a repeat customer.

Of course, I am still in the league. It's a new season, and I'm on a semi-new team. Unfortunately, I was in Europe for about the whole period between seasons, so I couldn't put much effort into finding a good team, but I think the best players from my old team are on the new one, plus a few others who I hope will be more serious. And if not, I think I'll be in shape to get a really good team for the winter season.

To get to the gym tonight, I had to take the 1 train up the West Side. They just recently restored service on that train all the way to South Ferry. This is a big deal, since the last few stops were cut off by the destruction of the World Trade Center. At the time, the relevant officials thought it would take more than two years to restore service, but they did it in a year. I saw the signs in the train about service to South Ferry (it's an old station with a short platform, so you can't get off the train there unless you're in the first five cars, I think), and it made me sad, because it reminded me yet again of what happened, but it was also reassuring in a way. Through tragedy, suffering, and grief, New York endures.
