I now find myself one of the maintainers of [ profile] amateurradio. Please feel free to take this as a source of inspiration to get your ham radio licenses and then join the community.

I spent some of this weekend operating in a ham radio contest. I couldn't operate for more than a few hours, what with the wife and small child and other commitments, but it was fun. What turned it into an honest-to-goodness nerdgasm was that I wrote1 the software that I used to keep my log and to calculate the score.

1For the Mac, using Objective-C and Cocoa.

It was a busy weekend, and it involved driving to Philadelphia for a couple of events, of which more later. But I went on the air for two hours before bed on Friday night (a contest was going on) and made contacts in Tobago, the Canary Islands, Jamaica, France, Spain, Honduras, The Gambia, and Turks & Caicos.

I got a signing bonus with the new job. A lot of it is going to bills, but I did buy one of these, and I'm almost done building one of these. I don't think I've been on HF since college, and I'm really looking forward to getting back on the air.

I have just heard a report via ham radio that looters are trying to break into another hospital that has patients trapped inside. This time it's Memorial Medical Center's Baptist Campus.

I just got an email saying that the Salvation Army's emergency radio network needs ham radio operators to volunteer to go to Louisiana and Mississipi to help with the relief effort. The commitment is for at least two weeks. I think that I'd go if Leo's surgery weren't in exactly two weeks.
